So with everyone talking about the economy, I just have to put my 2 cents in. I think it’s pretty ironic that in a society where we strive for more and more when we can truly afford less and less, we all are surprised at just how “broke” we all are. I am so tired of how our culture runs. I went to Toys R Us and was truly bothered by the bold marketing messages and number of overfilled carts around me screamed consumerism. I couldn’t even find one thing for my daughters birthday that we needed or something we didn’t either already have, or something that wasn’t extremely over priced. Tim and I have been tight finanically for while now, and I can honestly say it’s completely our fault. Not the government, retail stores, gas prices, or anything else… just our fault. We each have a choice every day on what is important, and what’s “needed” to meet our needs. We just got hit with $1,200 of medical bills from a 2 hour trip to the ER on our vacation when Morgan fell and hit her head. And we even have insurance. I’m feeling a little convicted at the moment about our lack of disipline about the priority of saving. Our church is also in a very revealing series about money, and God’s will for the way we manage it. Check out www.northheartland.org The basic truth I’m challenged with is so simple- Give, Save, and THEN live. Give to what God’s doing in this world, since it’s all from Him anyway and that is our purpose to help redeem the broken world we live in, Save for what may be coming in your life (medical bills, college, car repairs, etc.) and THEN live on the rest. WOW, so simple, yet I know at least we have it all backwards. What would our world look like if we all truly became generous, helping others who are suffering, and lived on what was left! Just think about that.

I guess we can all just do the best we can. We work, try to make
as much as we can, live as frugally as we can, but above all, we
try to remember how unimportant money is. I do not believe we will
need it in Heaven. It serves a purpose now, but should not be put
on a pedestal. After we have done our best, it should not consume
our minds and hearts. I feel, as you do, it all is too material
at this time of year. We neglect to remember that what it is truely
about. I also feel that there are other ways to give. Remember the
little drummer boy? Just a little food for thought.
